The Revealers

In the novel, The Revealers, the students of Parkland Middle felt connected through SchoolStream or as the students called it KidNet where they were able to chat or instant message. Most of you do this nightly through MSN Messenger. With KidNet and MSN nobody could break into or eavesdrop on your conversation without it being known. Not anymore. Today’s technology allows you to assume the identity of another person. Do you really know whom you are talking to in the cyber world?

It is 10:00 pm on a Wednesday night; you have finished your homework and you are chatting on MSN with three other friends. After 10 minutes two more friends ask to join the chat. By 10:30 pm five more people have joined and it is fun; however, there is a joke said about one of the people, rapidly followed by an insult. At first, no one knows how to respond, then seconds later a message pops up stating, “I didn’t say that! It isn’t me saying these things. Someone is using my name. What is going on here?”

What is the issue involved in this scenario? Why is this serious?

What would be a responsible way to handle this situation?

How could a situation like this be resolved? How would one of the three main characters from The Revealers deal with this situation?

The issue involved in this scenario is that they have started a rumor. And the person who started it is saying that she did not do it. This is very serious because this could lead to people bullying the person who started the rumor might be bullied for starting the rumor. A responsible way to handle this is to just say that it was a joke or ask an adult the help with the problem. to resolve this situation i think that they could have said that it was a joke. One of the main characters like Russell might tell the person to give a story about this issue to him to post on kidnet and maybe people might forget what happened.

Blog Question: Is bullying a rite of passage of childhood and adolescence? Is it apart of the maturation process one needs to go through to reach adulthood? Explain. Mrs. Hogeboom brings up this topic on page 108.

No, bullying is not a rite of passage of childhood and adolescence. Even though you get bullied sometimes it is not always a part of your life. It can be a part of maturation sometimes because that is the time you learn to be independent and getting bullied might help sometimes by making you handle your own problems like some . Like Mrs.Hogeboom brought it up in page 108 that sometimes people think that they have so much power and they are popular that sometimes they use it for bullying or to get what they want.Like sometimes people ask for lunch chits and they don't give it back. And if this continually happens. She also says that this revealer paper has made her think so much that she liked it alot. Some people think that bullying is fun which is not because what if the bully is the next one in line to get bullied.
Almost every middle schooler is a victim or a bully or a bystander it never changes. In all the schools i have been there always is a bully, victim or a bystander. If you have experienced being a victim then you know how it feels to be a prey and that is how Russell feels.
